Fall Paddleboarding Tips!

Still have paddleboarding on your mind?
Wonderful! So do we :)
Fall paddling means there's an increase and a decrease in two important things: there's an increase in the wind and a decrease in the tempuratures. With both of those things in mind, we want to remind you of checking the 5 W's before you decide to go out: Wind, Weather, Water, Waves, and What to Wear

Wind - Know your limit! White caps form around 13-ish MPH which means the water is moving enough to cause an unsteady surface. White caps are when we at Surf'SUP call it a day. How strong is the wind? What direction is it blowing and could take you to? Is it a consistent wind or gusts? All of these are great questions to ask before you decide if it's safe or not.
Weather - We're talking about the current conditions and the forecast while you're on the water. Do we have dark skies approaching? Is there lightning in the area? Surf'SUP has a 10 mile lightning radius. If lightning is within 10 miles, we don't go out. Is it going to rain soon? An approaching storm brings wind. Is it going to ahem snow soon? We're not ready for that... What are the overall conditions of the weather?
Water - How are the water conditions? It's important this late in the season to check for algae blooms and other dangerous levels to make sure everyone stays healthy and safe. How cold is the water? Follow the 120 rule - if the water temp and air temp equal 120, it's safe to go out if the other W's pass!
Waves - Yup. There's waves in Colorado. Does the place you're paddling allow motoroized vessels? Is there wake? Is the wind causing waves? Are you going to the river, how's the flow? If you're traveling near a coastline, how are the waves where you're at? Are they within your abilities?
What do you Wear - Dress for the water, then the weather. Wear clothing that will keep you warm if you get wet. And please...PLEASE....pretty please wear your PFD on your body! If you need one that fits your body comfortably, stop by Surf'SUP and we'll get you fit for one that meets all your needs!

Stay safe on the water during the shoulder seasons! But more importantly:

STAY STOKED!
